Nature Research Masterclasses 2019 Workshop

In order to improve the quality of publishing journal articles so that they can be published in international journals that have a high impact factor, the Publishers and Publications Agency (BPP) in collaboration with Nature Research organized the Nature Masterclasses Workshop 2019. This workshop is the second collaboration agenda between the BPP and Nature Research after the Nature Research Academies Workshop 2019 which was held in May 2019. Present as the speaker was Louise Adams, Ph.D. (Senior Editor of the Nature Review Disease Primers) and Kyle Legate, Ph.D. (Senior Editor and Team Manager, Nature Communications) in Springer Nature.

The event which lasted for two days (9-10 July 2019) in Multimedia Room I, UGM Head Office, was officially opened by the Vice Chancellor for Research and Community Service (P2M) UGM, drg. Ika Dewi Ana, Ph.D. In his opening remarks, Dr. Ika said that “UGM always strives to make a real impact on scientific development. Therefore, the Nature Masterclasses Workshop 2019 is an effort to support these efforts. Therefore, workshops like this must be held on an ongoing basis. Through this workshop, it is expected that UGM lecturers can be more active in writing and publishing their works in international journals.”

On the first day, Dr. Louise and Dr. Kyle took turns explaining the technicalities of good scientific writing. During the workshop, the speaker delivered his presentation interactively and was followed by exercises, so that the participants were very enthusiastic in attending the workshop from the beginning to the end. On the second day, the activity continued by reviewing the abstracts made by the participants the previous day. The speaker explained the editorial process and peer review, in this case, explained the tips for writing good comments when responding to reviewers’ comments. Furthermore, the technique is explained by writing a summary of interesting research, and plagiarism and ethical issues that must be done in the process of writing activities.

The series of events was then closed by the Head of the UGM Publishing and Publication Agency, Dr. Widodo, “Through this two-day workshop, we hope to produce journal articles that are ready to be published in a high impact factor journal in the near future.
