On Wednesday (February 06, 2019), DIY Provincial Library and Archives Office (DPAD) held a book review of UGM Press Publisher entitled “The Role of Local Wisdom and Social Capital in Disaster Risk Reduction and Coastal Development”, in Karang, Tirtohargo, Kretek, Bantul. Participants in the discussion got the book distributed by DPAD DIY to increase interest in reading books of the local community.

The book review presented a number of speakers, including representatives of the author, Dr. Arry Retnowati, S.Si., M.Sc. Arry Retnowati said that Tirtohargo is one of the villages in Kretek Sub-district, Bantul Regency which has the risk of catastrophic flooding of agricultural land and coastal flooding because it is close to the southern coast. Tirtohargo is a village known for its vast rice fields and has conservation and mangrove forests so that people can try to identify existing social capital in relation to environmental management and disaster risk reduction efforts. According to Arry Retnowati, this book does not only explain prevention but also seeks to identify forms of local wisdom and social capital in traditional community entities, especially in terms of community response to environmental management and disaster risk reduction efforts as a form of community role in sustainable development.

Besides Arry Retnowati, the guest speaker in the book review was Djuli Sugiarto, S.Sos., M.P., as the Head of the Development and Development Division of the DPAD DIY Library; Tustiyani, S.H., Member of Commission D DIY Regional Representative Council (DPRD); and Dwi Daryanto, Chief Executive of BPBD Bantul. Djuli Sugiarto hopes that the opportunity for book surgery will be used as a place for learning, socializing, exchanging ideas, and can inspire the spirit of the village community in developing reading interests and culture. “This book review can provide benefits as a means of promoting reading interest and reading culture in the community. Besides that, the community will gain knowledge about the role of local wisdom and social capital in disaster risk reduction and coastal development, “Djuli said.
