A reputable international journal is a journal that meets the criteria of an international journal and is indexed by the international database. Indexation is a process of registering a journal in the reputable indexing institution. The Indexing Institution will promote the indexed journal in its database to the public. The journal indexed by many institutions indirectly facilitates its citation in global. The increasing number of citations leads to the improvement of journal reputation. The journal indexation towards Scopus is one of UGM’s target to increase UGM’s reputation in the international level.
Purwani Istiana, MA., from Faculty of Geography UGM presented about the journal selection policy by Scopus in the workshop for preparing UGM’s journals towards Scopus on Friday, September 14th, 2018 in Multimedia I Room. The evaluation criteria by Scopus include journal policy, content, performance reputation of the editorial board, and online availability. Dr. Siti Nurleily Marliana, M.Sc. from Faculty of Biology UGM as a speaker discussed the comparison of several components as a form of self-evaluation in the Journal of Forest Science (https://jurnal.ugm.ac.id/jikfkt), Journal of the Civil Engineering Forum (https://jurnal.ugm.ac.id/jcef), Traditional Medicine Journal (https://jurnal.ugm.ac.id/TradMedJ), and Jurnal Psikologi (https://jurnal.ugm.ac.id/jpsi). The focus and scope of a journal are part of the important points that have to be considered by the journal manager. If the focus and scope are too broad, they will affect the scientific journal quality, thus indicate that the journal is less specific and less descriptive. Moreover, the focus and scope of a journal will highly impact the articles submitted and published by the journal. Focus and scope should be fit to the diversity of editorial board.
The navigation accessibility on the journal homepage is considered important. The journal managers were suggested to show the informative efficient header and homepage to facilitate the team from Scopus in assessing the journal. The effective journal’s homepage indicates that the journal is managed professionally. In this occasion, there was also an evaluation of English quality in journal homepage, abstract, and article sample from the four journals. Based on the evaluation, the English quality still needs improvement by involving a professional proofreader since it is important in the process of indexing to Scopus. (BPP UGM / Syahrul & Kiki)
